Therapeutic Program:
This program accepts youth from ages 12-18. The youth in this program are referred to our agency from the Department of Health (DOC) and the length of stay can be from 6 months up to 12 months. Referred youth must have at least one diagnosis and a Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) score of over 40.

Staff are trained and supported to implement key elements of treatment in the context of family and community life while supporting the goals of permanency planning. The role of the staff is central to the service delivery approach, but treatment planning is a team function carried out under the clinical direction of licensed professional staff. Treatment typically focuses on teaching the adaptive, pro-social skills and responses which equip young persons and their natural and foster families with the means to deal effectively with the unique conditions or individual circumstances which have created the need for treatment.

Independent Living Program
The goal of the Individual Living Program is to provide a safe, stale environment while assisting youth HRTC to develop necessary life skills that need to become self-sufficient, productive and contribution of society.

We provide life skills’ training to the clients. We also provide on and off-campus work activities that we feel are beneficial to our client for independent living skills include financial skills, cooking care, life interests, hobbies and other skills and talents needed. Our agency strives to equip our clients with the knowledge moral values needed for success in life.

For those client who plan to continue their education beyond school, we have an avenue of assistance. Because of the of those interested in the higher education of our clients fund exists to provide college and vocational assistance to continuing in these endeavors. Our staff begins early in assisting those interested in furthering their education.

Tutorials are available to assist in preparation for college exams. Assistance is given in completing all necessary and related forms.

Emergency Shelter Program
Are short-term homes. This program accepts teens from ages 12-18. Teenagers are currently able to stay in a Emergency Shelter from between 1 to 90 days, for the purposes of meeting needs youth in crisis in a family setting. Families that are required for the Emergency Shelter program should have specialized training in helping teens in crisis. Emergency Shelter Program foster families are assessed based on the following:

  • Willingness and ability to meet the need of kids in crisis;
  • Family composition;
  • Meeting the state licensing requirements; and
  • Meeting the required competencies needed for fostering based on the PRIDE Training.

Wrap Around Services
A MATCH-funded program offering supportive services and their families when young people have completed a program and returned to their home communities. Wrap-services are provided to young people returned to the house, family or origin, to kinship care or to foster care.

Wrap Around Services are comprehensive, home-based health treatment and case management services designed for severely emotionally disturbed youth between the ages of 12-18 in the least restrictive environment and are provided to:

  • Families in which the child is at-risk in their home placement
  • Families in which the child is returning to a home and community following out-of-home placement for whom stressors are negatively impacting child and family functioning; and
  • Young adults working towards independent living.

In any given case, Wrap Around Services will aim to accomplish one or more of the following goals:

  • To enhance or improve individual and family functioning by being within the context of their culture and community;
  • To strengthen, stabilize, and preserve placement;
  • To reunite youth with their families and reintegrate your community following out-of-home placement;
  • To prevent, reduce, or eliminate behaviors that place a client or community at-risk (including risk psychiatric hospital or other out-of-home placement);
  • To promote safe, stable, and nurturing family environment maintaining or strengthening family connections; and
  • To assist parents in improving their parenting skills and their parental strengths while supporting in their care for their children.

Life Skills and Behavior Intervention Services
Youth coming in to residential treatment have exhibited a range of extremely high risk behaviors such as aggression to other, self abuse, runaway, suicidal gestures etc. Therapeutic staff under the supervision of the Clinical Team provides a systematic program to encourage and shape pro-social behavior while helping the youth stop unsafe and high risk behaviors. Consultation regarding effective behavioral programs are provided to the youth’s family, foster family, teachers, etc., as needed.

Therapy and Clinical Services
Credentialed therapists provide individual, group and family therapy as prescribed in the youth’s treatment plan. All clients on campus will receive individual therapy once per week. Therapists also, provide crisis intervention and crisis related therapy sessions as needed. Weekly group therapy’s offered throughout the year and may include, ongoing process and daily living groups, groups focused or preventing sexual acting out, play groups and music groups.

Psychiatric Care/Medication Management
The clients at the Center diagnosed with emotional, behavioral and mental disorders. After admission a staff contract Psychiatrist provides a psychiatric assessment that includes a review and assessment of any medications. The client’s psychiatrist and staff meet with the youth every month to evaluate the need and effectiveness of medication. In addition to the face-to-face meeting with the client, the psychiatrist will provide with detailed behavioral information to help determine what medications are necessary.

Testing and Evaluation
Psychological testing provided on site by contract Psychologists. Staff obtains updated assessment and testing information approximately once per year and always updates testing when planning for discharge or any major shift in treatment.

Educational
The children with the Center attend various schools in the Hawaii School District . The Special Education Coordinator works with the school district special education staff to insure children receive an optimal school placement and any needed additional services. The Special Education Coordinator maintain frequent communication with teachers, attend IEP meetings and provide ongoing communication with the school and staff at the Center. The Coordinator work with teachers and staff to insure children are able to participate in class trips, parties and extra-curricular activities as appropriate. The Coordinator mobilizes volunteer tutors help children during homework time and to provide one-to-one tutoring for children who need extra academic to help.

Computers are available on campus for youths to use for homework, research and special education programs. During the summer, youth participate in an on campus resources time that includes an academic component designed to help them maintain reading and math levels attained during the school year.

Recreation and Enrichment Services
Staff members supervise volunteers who provide tutoring, help with homework, one-on-one mentoring and group activities for youth throughout the year. On site recreation, sports, crafts, reading and cultural activities are offered on going every day. Youth participate in community activities such as horse back riding, swimming, fishing, cultural and musical events. On campus recreation services includes water play, swings, slides, gardening, team sports, hiking, cooking, arts and crafts, etc.

Basic Needs
Many of the children in the therapeutic program have been severely neglected. This means that over time their basic needs have not been met or have only been met sporadically. Our staff work to make sure every client has appealing nutritious meals and snacks, clean living space, help with hygiene and hair care, proper fitting clothes and plenty of adult supervision and attention. An important part of our treatment program is to help children develop good self-care habits. Staff complete a hygiene self care assessment as a part of the child’s treatment plan and children are actively rewarded for learning to brush their teeth, comb hair and other self-care tasks.

Medical and Dental
Prior to admission each client has a physical exam and soon after admission a dental exam. Medical and dental goals are established in the client’s treatment plan to insure follow up for any medical and dental needs. The Center staff coordinators all medical and dental care treatment; insuring that each client has yearly physical, dental and vision exams.
